About Organic Food

What does 'organic' really mean?

A food can be called organic if it’s produced in harmony with nature and without the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Before all the modern industrial farming kicked off, organic farming was just how things were done. Our great-great-great-great (you get the idea) grandparents were all about using what nature gave them to grow their crops.

So, organic farming isn’t a new fad in town. It is the OG way to farm.

Is organic food healthier than food grown with chemicals?

This question deserves a long answer but we will keep it short for now.

Yes, organic food is generally considered healthier than food grown with chemicals. It may reduce your exposure to pesticide residues, toxic metals and other harmful chemicals. They also generally contain higher levels of antioxidants and certain micronutrients, such as vitamin C, zinc, and iron.

In India, the nutritional value of our food has declined significantly over the past 50 years. Bringing it back to original levels would require a complete transformation of our food system and growing food organically will be one of the key drivers in this transition.

Why is organic food more expensive?

One of the major reason is lack of demand. Less people eating organic food means that it costs more to bring food from farm to your table. Often, brands also charge a ‘premium’ because it’s still considered a niche.

But when you buy from us, you know that 60% of what you pay goes to the farmer collectives. No premium pricing here. And if more of you buy from us, then the costs will come down and it will make organic food affordable for all. But, there will always be some price gap because here, farmers get the just price of growing healthy nutritious food.

A world is possible where organic food is affordable and yet, it is not coming at the expense of the people who our growing our food. Let’s build this world together? 🙂
